Suárez heads Colombia into an early lead
Mexico took control of possession at the start, with Mora helping direct play in midfield as the team advanced into Colombia’s half. Colombia nevertheless scored first. In the ninth minute, Richard Ríos broke forward on the right and delivered a cross for Suárez, who moved ahead of his marker to finish with a forceful header.
Mexico resumed its pressure but struggled to break through a defense led by captain Dávinson Sánchez. Colombia protected its advantage through the rest of the opening half despite conceding much of the ball. Sánchez was particularly effective in individual defensive contests as Mexico searched for a route to goal.
Two shots hit the frame in one attack
Mexico’s clearest first-half opportunities arrived in the 32nd minute. Mora helped construct the attack before winger Roberto Alvarado sent a shot across goal and against the right post. Luis Chávez reached the rebound inside the penalty area, but his follow-up struck the crossbar. Neither attempt produced the equalizer Mexico had been pursuing.
The pressure continued after the interval. Hirving Lozano went through for a one-on-one chance, drawing a save from Colombia goalkeeper Álvaro Montero, although the move was subsequently ruled offside. Colombia also threatened through Jhon Arias, whose free kick required a save from Mexico goalkeeper Rangel.
Mora makes the breakthrough in the 62nd minute
Jesús Gallardo supplied the pass that finally unlocked Colombia’s defense. His long delivery found Mora inside the penalty area, where the teenager changed direction to get past center-back Jhon Lucumí. Mora then finished beyond Montero to make it 1–1, adding a goal to his earlier involvement in Mexico’s midfield and attacking play.
Both coaches made changes as the second half progressed, but neither side created enough late attacking threat to alter the result. Mexico recovered from the early setback to avoid defeat in Márquez’s opening match. Colombia, having held the lead from the ninth minute, had to settle for a draw after Mora’s finish.
New players feature in the Baltimore friendly
The September 26 friendly at M&T Bank Stadium was Colombia’s first match of the international window under coach Néstor Lorenzo. Kickoff was scheduled for 9 p.m. in Baltimore, corresponding to 8 p.m. in Colombia.
Colombia played without James Rodríguez and Juan Fernando Quintero, while Arias wore the team’s No. 10 shirt for the first time. Three players made their Colombia debuts: full-back Samuel Velásquez, young midfielder Matías Orozco of Spain’s Castellón, and Athletico Paranaense forward Kevin Viveros. Mexico also gave minutes to Germán Berterame, Jeremy Márquez and Isaías Violante as the teams tested different personnel after the equalizer.
